On August 12, 2017, multiple white nationalist groups organized separate, but closely coordinated shield walls , which were responsible for the start and majority of the violence, and ultimately the shut down of the Unite The Right rally . The main shield wall contingent marched in together under the banner of the Nationalist Front .
